You know, February was a short month, but it still feels like tons of stuff happened. I am really glad we’re in March now though, I’m OVER winter! Let’s do a recap:
February Goals:
Have a blast on my birthday! It was so much fun! And, I’m officially a nerd, because I wrote a post about my lesson learned…I’m such a dork!Take a breather when I need it.I ended up needing a lot of these. I had a back issue and well, couldn’t do much. But it was nice to be forced to slow down. Now I think I’m a bit more mentally prepared to get through the next few months.Read, read, read, and then read some more.So I finished reading One Fifth Avenue by Candace Bushnell, and I actually then added Jackie Collins’ new Poor Little Bitch Girl to the list. I also re-read a ton of romance novels (it was February), and a couple sci-fi. I do want to read through some other new books in March, but it’s always so nice to return to a tried-and-true favorite.Work on my Wii Fit yoga and keep swimming. So, I stuck with the yoga until my back injury. I’m solidly swimming now, though we keep having pool closures at my gym. Hopefully March will be better.Talk to my brothers more often.AI actually think I did ok here. I would like to be better, but I did do some texting, chatting, and phone calls with the boys. I want to keep this one up as well.
On to March!
- Save a bit more money. I’ve been doing some automatic deposits over the last couple years, but things were so tight I kept dipping into my savings to keep going. I’ve got a little bit more there than usual, but I want to keep adding. I’m going to look into some better ways to get money there and keep it there.
- Figure out how to make an infographic resume. I don’t really have access to fancy design programs, but I might be able to make something work. I’m going to play around with it. While I don’t always consider myself a Creative the same way a web designer might, it seems like a nice option to have for when I want to volunteer on boards or put up on my Brazen Profile. If you have any tips, feel free to send them along.
- Plan weekly menus. I usually do this when I go grocery shopping, but I haven’t stuck with it as much as I would like. I want to get back to this routine, and it will also help with goal number 1 for saving money.
- Get the back issues under control. Over the last month, I’ve been trying to heal from inflammation of fluid in one of my vertebrae. I have good days and bad, but I can tell that when I try to go back to completely normal, I overdo it. I need to give myself the time to heal. There’s no reason for me to push myself only to never fully recover.
- Plan a trip to see my parents. Usually after March, the weather starts to get nice enough (we hope) that I can make the 8-hour drive to my parents. I’d like to get something on the calendar, plan ahead, and start the spring off relaxed. St. Louis may not be Mexico, but my mom makes pretty mean tacos.
To participate in the meet-up:
1. Post a list of your career/life related goals for February, along with your checked off January goals if you’d like, on your own blog.
2. Come back to BrazenCareerist.com network and leave a link to your post in the comments (*If you don’t have your own blog, feel free to share your list here in the comments to join in!)
3. Then, check out everyone else’s lists as they leave comments – click their links, visit their blogs, say hello, meet, greet and support each other because that’s what it’s all about!

I’ve only started reading your blog, but I do know a lot about back problems. If you’re having back problems, the last thing you need to do is drive for 8 hours. If you do take that trip, be sure to stop every hour and get out to walk for 10 minutes. It will add time to the trip, but you’ll be able to stand up straight when you arrive.
Hi Jude, thanks for sharing the concern. At this point, I have been working with my doctor on what I can and can’t do. I know that she prefers my driving to flying, though, because flying brings up all kinds of other issues. Since I’m thinking the trip would be about 7-8 weeks out, I’m sure I’ll have a sign off beforehand. And if I don’t, I don’t. That’s what I love about driving: no cancelled plane tickets 🙂 Thanks!!
Awesome accomplishments! I am sorry to hear about the back injury.. I am nursing a few injuries myself lately and know that they can be a real bummer motivationally. Weekly menus can actually probably help you in your “save money” goal as well. I find that if I plan ahead, I buy less. I am a giant food nerd so I can spend a ton if gone unchecked in a supermarket. Here’s to an awesome March 🙂
I saw your knees were bothering you! Hopefully they don’t keep you from running in NYC. I am trying to be really good about not getting things if they aren’t on the list. Stick to the list! It does help. Here here!!
Great job accomplishing your goals! For the record, I thought your birthday post was awesome 🙂 Your March goals sound like good ones. Planning weekly menus is something I try and do too. I also look at the circular ahead of time to see what’s on sale. If there’s something that I’ll use eventually and it won’t go bad, I buy it when there’s a sale and just find somewhere to keep it. It saves money because I would have bought it eventually when it ran out even if it wasn’t on sale. Good luck with your March goals!
Good call on getting stuff when it’s on sale. I love these Fiber Plus bars that have antioxidants and don’t taste like cardboard. They were on sale for $1.79 one day, usually $3.99, and I think I snagged 8 boxes. Might have seemed live overkill, but I love those bars! And thanks about the birthday post, yeah, I’m all about learning lessons…and of course, the little voice in my head says, “I should write a post about that!” Is it bad to admit I have a voice that talks to me about blogging? Thanks Sam!
An infographic resume?!? That sounds awesome. Do you have any example links? Would love to see one.
Hi Rebecca! So some samples I found were on the Cool Infographics blog: http://www.coolinfographics.com/blog/2010/1/8/16-infographic-resumes-a-visual-trend.html
I’ve been doing some googling to see what else is out there as well, but I’m excited to start something. Now that I have a core resume, I think this will be fun!
Great job on your February goals! Good luck with meal planning…if you can make it work, it’s excellent. I notice a nice reduction in my grocery bill when I do it.
Thanks Sheena! That’s the hope (plus you know, eat better too)!
Wow, I saw some of those infographic resumes. The one that looks like a subway map is probably my favorite, although probably wouldn’t work for me. It seems like something like that would take a whole lot more effort and creativity than a “standard” resume, but I love the idea. Have you also looked at prezi.com? I saw someone made their resume using that. I forget who it was now… :-/ but it was more of a graphic + interactive resume. Pretty cool stuff. Resumes all around this month!
And I’m sorry to hear about your back. That has to be awful! I had a similar health issue happen last month. I have heart problems (SVT, fast irregular heartbeat) when I have too much caffeine, alcohol, and/or stress. I had an episode early last month that scared the crap out of me, so I pretty quickly cut out ALL caffeine & alcohol, increased my rest time, and learned to take care of myself. So take it easy there!
Carlee, I hope you’re ok! It sounds like you have to be on top of a lot in your diet to keep going. I hope everything works out ok. Yeah, I’m excited about working on the resume. I think it will give me a good chance to experiment a bit with design, outside of PowerPoint. Hopefully I’ll be able to post it in my April meet up!
Good job with February, Emily! Looks like you got a lot done.
As for your infographic resume, from what I hear a lot of employers prefer the most basic looking design for a resume, no graphics or anything. It might be a nice idea to spice it up online, but be careful sending it out with job applications. The most eye-popping part of a resume should be the experience and knowledge of the job.
If you’re interested, go to adobe.com and download the free trials of the programs. There are tons of free tutorials online and you can learn the basics real quick and put together some nice designs, all before the 30 day trial expires. Might be something to look into.
Good luck!
– Mike
Hi Mike, thanks for sharing the tips. I’m in the talent industry, so I am very conscious of how tradition vs. untraditional resumes are received. We even work with our international clients on how CVs with photos get received in the US. I think as we all continue to develop who we are online, it shouldn’t be bad to have another way of portraying it. Who knows, my infographic version could end up being my About for my blog instead of a what’s there now?
Free trials are a good solution, though my second computer for those kinds of programs is getting a little behind the times. Hopefully the programs won’t tire out the old bugger. Thank you!
Reading your goals after having posted mine gives me the strange idea I should have copied all of yours first. So I am really looking forward to your progress, maybe I can take something over to April. Especially on the menu planning. I kind of feel sometimes that this cripples my spontaneity when it comes to dinner making. On the other side, most times I am not in the mood for spontaneity anyways.
Have fun with your parents. My dad came over to BCN for the weekend it even though we basically eat all the time we had a fabulous weekend together. Reminded me that my parents do miss me from time to time. So spending quality time with them is definitely a good thing to do.
Enjoy March!
Hi Valentina, I think I’m very similar. I’d like to think I’m spontaneous, but I’m not really. I literally order the same thing every time when I go to restaurants. The thing is, when I stray, I don’t like what I get!
And don’t you notice when family visits, all you do is eat? Or least we do…but I do love seeing them, it’s so important to me. Thanks!
Emily, also sorry to hear about your back. Hopefully the yoga helps..
Regarding saving money: Ramit Sethi’s blog (www.iwillteachyoutoberich) is chock-full of no-nonsense helpful tips, both for saving more and earning more. You can probably glean some good tips that suit your lifestyle.
Good luck with March!
Claire, thanks for the tips. I’ll check out the money saving tips, and see how else to work those into my routine.
And I just came back from a visit with my family in DC.. definitely good for the soul. So I’m doubly supportive of that goal!
